A wonderful antique 19th-century Geneva Hand Fluter, patented August 21, 1866, and made as a specialized textile and laundry tool for creating decorative pleats and fluted ruffles in fabric. This substantial two-piece cast iron fluting iron features a beautifully sculptural rocking presser with handle, matching corrugated bed attached to the original dark metal base. The raised markings read “GENEVA HAND FLUTER,” “GENEVA ILL,” and “PAT’D AUGUST 21. 1866 / HEAT THIS.” The patent and construction correspond to the historic Geneva Hand Fluter manufactured in Geneva, Illinois.
The deeply ridged surfaces and aged iron finish give this antique laundry tool a wonderful industrial, primitive, and utilitarian character. Originally, the corrugated bed was heated and fabric was placed between the bed and rocking presser to create decorative fluting and pleats — a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century domestic textile work.
Today, it makes an especially interesting display piece for a collection of antique tools, sewing antiques, textile history, Victorian-era objects, laundry memorabilia, or industrial farmhouse decor. Its unusual mechanical form and prominent 1866 patent markings make it a great conversation piece for a shelf, studio, sewing room, library, or antique tool collection.
