A remarkable piece of mid-century American ephemera — this framed advertising thermometer was distributed as a promotional keepsake by Werner's Grocery of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Behind glass, a richly colored scene depicts a Union soldier and a Confederate soldier seated together beneath a shady tree, the U.S. Capitol dome glowing warmly in the background — a reconciliation image popular in the post-Civil War commemorative tradition. A glass-tube thermometer is inset to the left, and gold silhouette vignettes of a cavalry rider and a rifleman flank the merchant's placard below. The metal frame and reverse-painted glass construction are classic of mid-20th century American advertising novelties.
