A beautiful vintage powder horn in excellent display condition — the kind of piece that stops you in your tracks. The natural cattle or buffalo horn body is polished to a luminous semi-gloss finish with a stunning coloration of silver-grey, warm cream, and amber, with natural translucent grain striations that give it an almost sculptural quality. This one appears unused, showing none of the wear or darkening typical of working powder horns, making it an exceptional display specimen.
The spout end is fitted with a turned hardwood plug or stopper in a warm oak or maple tone, wrapped with traditional leather cord lashing. Attached to the stopper by a leather thong is a small secondary horn tip — a curved taper of natural horn historically used as a priming horn or powder measure, a detail that collectors will immediately recognize and appreciate. The wide base end is sealed with a flat natural horn disc cap secured with a leather loop. A long leather thong lanyard allows the horn to be worn across the body in the traditional frontier manner.
