A beautifully preserved vintage sick call crucifix — also known as a last rites cross, mission cross, or bedside crucifix — dating to the mid-20th century. Traditionally kept in Catholic homes to be quickly assembled for a priest's visit to administer last rites, these crosses conceal a hidden compartment in inside designed to hold two candles and a holy water vial. This example does not include the original candles or holy water bottle, leaving the compartment open and ready to be repurposed however you like — store small keepsakes, a folded note, a spare key, or refill it with your own candles and holy water.
The cross itself is a stunning object in its own right: warm honey-toned wood with routed channels inlaid with faux mother-of-pearl panels — a pearlescent acetate sheet material with a soft, wavy iridescent shimmer, very typical of mid-century Catholic devotional goods. The gold-tone corpus is finely detailed with a crown of thorns, draped cloth, and outstretched arms, anchored by small black nail accents at the hands and feet. A cast INRI plaque sits above the figure. The cross arms feature elegantly beveled notched ends and the base has a built-in stand for freestanding display.
